BNT - A Korean research team develops the world's

first eco-friendly filter that removes microplastics from water

A collaboration between the two technologies: ‘electrophoresis’ of Kiwon and ‘triboelectric generator’ of DGIST

The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) and the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DIGIST) joint research team announced on the 6th that they have developed the first eco-friendly filter that can remove not only micro but also nano-sized microplastics from water. As the world's first eco-friendly filter that removes microplastics without environmental pollution, it is expected to contribute to solving the problem of microplastics, which is emerging as a major environmental problem. The result was published in the June 11 online edition of ‘Nano Energy’, an international academic journal in the field of energy engineering, and is scheduled to be published in September.

Microplastics in Drinking Water and Oceans

Microplastics are small plastic particles less than 5 mm in diameter. There are primary microplastics, which are made small from the beginning, and secondary microplastics, which are finely broken and split. It mainly flows into the sea and contaminates the marine ecosystem. Through the disruption of the endocrine system of marine organisms, it accumulates in humans, the top predator, and acts as a threatening factor, such as disturbing human body functions.

The severity of the microplastic problem and its dangers to humans have been constantly warned for a long time. (Link to article – ‘Concentration of microplastics in your blood’) However, microplastics are so small that it is difficult to separate or process them with filters that have been used to filter out impurities. In particular, in the case of ultra-fine plastics having a nanometer (nm) size smaller than a micrometer (㎛), the filter may be clogged or the filter itself may cause pollution of the marine ecosystem.

In the midst of the need for a new method of environmentally friendly microplastic removal technology that can overcome these limitations, an eco-friendly power plant that removes microparticles in water was developed for the first time. A joint research team led by Dr. Cho Han-cheol's research team from the Precision Machinery Process Control Research Group at the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and Professor Joo-hyeok Lee of the Department of Energy Engineering at DGIST succeeded in developing an eco-friendly particle removal technology that can treat microplastic particles in water for the first time in the world.

What is the principle of the eco-friendly microplastic filter? Electrophoresis and TENG
As a fine particle removal technique, ‘electrophoresis’ technology was used. It is a technique to separate organic substances using electrical properties. When a strong electric field is generated in water, micro and nano particles in the water quickly move toward the electrode (substrate) and adhere to it, thereby removing microplastic particles. The research team paid attention to the fact that the efficiency of electrophoresis can be increased through high voltage. In addition, it developed a new microparticle removal technology that removes microplastics by grafting a triboelectric generator capable of outputting high voltage and low current.

BNT - Biden makes surprise first visit to Ukraine

US President Joe Biden, who was scheduled to visit Poland this week, made his first visit to Kyiv since the start of the war.

US President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine Monday, February 20, to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky, a gesture of solidarity that comes days before the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of the country.

"One year later, Kyiv stands," Biden said. "And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands. The Americans stand with you, and the world stands with you." Biden spent more than five hours in the Ukrainian capital, consulting with Zelensky on next steps, honoring the country’s fallen soldiers and meeting with US embassy staff in the war-torn country.

Biden delivered remarks with Zelensky at Mariinsky Palace to announce an additional half billion dollars in US assistance and to reassure Ukraine of American and allied support as the conflict continues. "One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands," Biden said. "Joseph Biden, welcome to Kyiv! Your visit is an extremely important sign of support for all Ukrainians," Zelensky wrote on Telegram, in English.

Biden stressed his "unflagging commitment" in defending Ukraine's territorial integrity, and promised new arms. He announced an additional half-billion dollars in US assistance, including shells for howitzers, anti-tank missiles, air surveillance radars and other aid but no new advanced weaponry.

BNT - Biden to 'contrast notes' and Sunak on Ukrainian fightback

Joe Biden is supposed to raise worries over the harmony cycle in Northern Ireland and examine the Ukrainian counter-hostile against Russia with Rishi Sunak when they meet one week from now.

The US President will meet the Top state leader in London and with the Ruler at Windsor Palace on Monday prior to making a beeline for the Nato highest point in Lithuania.

There has been criticism of Mr. Biden's plan to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, which are prohibited by many allies, including Britain, and he will arrive in the UK.

The White House said that Mr. Biden and Mr. Sunak would "compare notes" during their fifth meeting in as many months regarding their support for Ukraine and the situation on the battlefield.

However, post-Brexit tensions are also likely to be discussed by Mr. Biden, who has previously stated that he wants to ensure that the "Brits didn't screw around" in Northern Ireland.

Amanda Sloat, Europe senior director for the National Security Council, told reporters: He continues to place a strong emphasis on cooperating with the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as maintaining peace, prosperity, and stability throughout the entire region.

"I would imagine that those would be the general range of topics that they would discuss," and "Northern Ireland is certainly an issue that the President regularly talks about with his British counterpart" are just a few examples.

During his time in the UK, Mr. Biden will also attend a climate finance mobilization forum that focuses on supporting developing nations.

On Tuesday, both men will meet with their Nato allies in Vilnius to discuss Ukraine's bid for membership.

Ms Sloat said: " Given that both leaders will be flying to Vilnius the day before, I imagine this will be a chance for them to update each other on developments in discussions leading up to the Vilnius summit.

"It will be a chance for them to share any useful info on both of our help for Ukraine and their continuous endeavors on the front line."

The UK is one of 123 signatories to the Show on Bunch Weapons, which forbids their utilization or accumulating due to their aimless impact on regular citizen populaces.

The weapons scatter a lot of bomblets over a large area.

Even after conflicts are over, bombs that haven't been detonated may still be a threat to civilians.

House Safeguard Advisory group director Tobias Ellwood asked the US to "rethink".

BNT - Sister Roma

Republicans Walk Out As Drag Nun ‘Sister Roma’ Honored At California Capitol

Protest took a back seat to the celebration at the California Capitol Monday as lawmakers honored drag nun Sister Roma and proclaimed June LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Roma, who belongs to the San Francisco-based Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, was one of 15 guests invited by the legislature’s LGBTQ+ Caucus as the Assembly and Senate passed resolutions proclaiming June as LGBTQ+ pride month. Republicans in the Senate called on Senate President pro Tem Toni Atkins of San Diego to revoke Roma’s invitation last Thursday. A group of Catholic and evangelical Christian demonstrators gathered on the Capitol’s west steps Monday afternoon to protest Roma’s recognition. In the Assembly, when Roma came to the front to receive her award, Republican members left the floor and retreated to the lounge in the rear of the chamber. The remaining members clapped, whooped, and cheered, giving Roma a prolonged standing ovation. Fellow honoree Harry Lit shouted from the back of the chamber, "Love you Roma!" Speaking to the Senate, Democratic Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman of Stockton introduced the pride resolution and noted that she identified as a proud Catholic.
